Being an Incomplete Historie of the Shire of South KeepAS XII (May 1977 - April 1978)Shire of Southkeep foundedIn June, 1977 The Shire of Southkeep (Dade County) was founded-Cole of Cornwall first Seneschal. Peasant's Revel and the Naming of Trimaris.......On 8-13-77 An Crosaire & Oldenfeld held a Peasant Revel From Talewinds, Vol.4,no5.May ASXX "How Trimaris Got Its Name" by the Hon. Lady Sieglinde von Truso. Regional feelings can be dated from the first town meeting held at the Wyvernwood Memorial Tourney in 1977. Sometime that summer it was decided to give our region a name. The next event after Border Raids I, was the first Oldenfeld meets An Crosaire Peasant's Revel on August 13 (this by the way was the first peasant event held in the Knowne World). A town meeting was held to come up with a name and a device for the new region. Many names were bandied about including Choranthia, meaning flowering, by Lady Murreann Deora-de, called Strider. One of the discussed was Tritonia, because Master Taliesynne Nychymwrh has always liked the symbol of the old man of the sea, but Sir Tetsuo Sakara hated it because tritonia is the name of a disgusting looking California sea slug. A linguist named Aias called the Whore's son, came up with a list containing many names to choose from. His list included the name Trimaris. In as much as Trimaris meant three seas and Florida is surrounded on three sides by water, Trimaris finally won out. For the device, my sister, Lady Gwynneth ap Gwynneth Eyravon saw a charge in one of the books which hadn't been used very much and she made a lot of tentative drawings in the colors of blue and yellow. This was later changed to blue and silver, which made all the difference. That is how Trimaris and Triskeles were born. Southkeep's First RevelIn October, 1977 the Shire of Southkeep held their first event AS XIII (1978-1979) Publicity!A mention in the "Friends & Neighbors" section of the Miami Herald on 10-1-78 reads "WARNING- If you see a bunch of lords and fair ladies engaged in dubious battle with the Greynolds Park Mound today there is no cause for alarms. It might just be the Society for Creative Anachronisms, Inc. pursuing their favorite pastime - stirring up the mists of yore. Seneschal Bruce Cole, of the Shire of South Keep (Miami) of the Kingdom of Meridies (Florida to Tennessee) said the club members would show up in full medieval garb, have a procession, dance a medieval dance and perform their version of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales." Sangre del Sol & Southkeep Picnic11-19-78 Sangre del Sol and Southkeep hosted a picnic held at John Easterlin Park for the southern shires. Fighting and fencing was planned along with other games. Publicity!12-6-78 South Keype and Sangre del Sol were featured in an article in the Miami Herald as the members were planning a Yule Feast honoring the 13th year of the Society. 1982Twelfth Night Celebration1-9-82 The Shire of Southkeep did deem it time for its annual Twelfth Night Feast. The populace of the shire gathered at the hall of Lord Alexander Mareschal, Seneschal of the Shire. To the sorrow of the populace none from outside the shire appeared, the messages to the rest of the kingdom having been delayed. Several of the shire's fighters did gather in the open field before Lord Mareschal's hall to engage in a friendly exchange of arms. After this the populace did remove to Lord Mareschal's hall for the Feast and Revel. Two cakes were served -- one for the ladies and the other for the gentlemen-- in an attempt to choose a king and queen of fools. This method proving unavailing, the populace was forced to draw straws. In this manner Totoya Kato and Eleanore of Williamsford-on Trent (formerly called Eleanore Woodbringer) were selected as king and queen. His majesty immediately made two proclamations, to wit: no one was to walk behind their majesty's table and all officers, their majesties excepted, were to say "nay" after each word; this last to the dismay of said officers. The feast consisted of chicken with dressing, wassail, boiled maze -- a delicacy from
far away lands--a sauce made from apples, cheese, bread, fresh greens, oranges and apples.
Ian the Bane, a Scotsman of hearty disposition, was created court master-of-arms, with
which dignity her majesty later added Queen's Champion. Ian entered into his duties with a
will and was heard to loudly toast all and sundry. Her majesty amazed the populace by
entering into the festivities with a right good will. Lord Mareschal was named Court Fool by his majesty, an honor he declined to accept. His majesty declared a groveling context which Cole of Cornwall easily won. Lord Mareschal reminded the populace of the traditional poetry contest, but it appeared he was the only entry. A cloven apple was then passed. I must need mention here that Cole of Cornwall and his lady wife Raissa of Gascony had brought with them their little dog China. When the cloven apple reached Cole he passed it to China, and then China, with the help of her master, asked his majesty if he would like a clove. His majesty looked very ill, but accepted China's offer, much to the amusement of the populace. China, be it known to her honor, conducted herself like a lady. Toward the end of the festivities, his majesty, by dint of much persuasion in the form of several assassination attempts, and a rising of the populace, was compelled to change his second proclamation to: All officer to say "nay" after each sentence. submitted by Eleanor of Williamsford, Historian South Keype Barry College DemoOn 2-20-82, the Shire of South Keype attended a fair at Barry College where the populace gave a fighting demonstration and answered questions about the SCA and Medieval history. A.S. XXXI (MAY 1996-APRIL 1997) 11/23/96 John of South Keep Awarded AOA January 26, 1997 Childrens Olympiad a Sangre del Sol event The Death of Josef of Itil Incident Report for the Childrens Olympiad, Sunday, , Greynolds Park, Miami, Florida. Approximate time: 3:00 p.m. (guestimate, witness had no watch) Witness of Event: William Herrera (Lord William de Cordoba) At approximately 3:00 p.m. Myself & Joseph had just completed fighting the melee on the Tower. I was conversing with another combatant when Joseph asked to get by, complaining he was feeling ill. At that time, I noticed he was a little red and flushed in the face. He walked down to the end of the path at the Tower, put down his gear, knelt down and proceeded to rest. I then turned to go about my own business. He seemed O.K. at the time, just a little winded. I proceeded to walk down the hill, when I heard someone call for his inhaler, I then proceeded back up the hill to see what was wrong. At the time, he was being attended to by Elaine and Wulfhere who then called for a chiurgeon. Burt, the Autocrat, and several others responded and proceeded to attend to Joe. They then called for someone to call 911 and I and one other proceeded to our cars to get our cellular phones. Someone else got through and made the call. Burt informed the 911 attended of Josephs condition. Apparently, Joseph was unable to breathe on his own and Wulfhere began to perform mouth-to-mouth resisutation. Joseph was unresponsive and Wulfhere was unable to breathe into his lungs, his airway had been blocked. One of Mittions House Members ran to the gates of the park to direct the rescue vehicles. The Paramedics were then directed to the Tower and then brought oxygen to Joseph. They began to perform CPR on Joseph at the Tower and then shortly to the rescue vehicle. They then intubated him as they were unable to get him to breathe on his own. Elaine provided medical background information to the paramedics. Elaine was familiar with Josephs medications. I and several others provided crowd patrol as Mundanes began to crowd around. The Paramedics then loaded him into the vehicle. It was then decided that Elaine, due to Josephs medical conditions, that she be the one to ride with the ambulance to Columbia Aventura Hospital. We returned to the main event site where Burt as Autocrat officially ended the event. It was then decided to go to the hospital when I as one of the Southern members of the Shire was the one to transport Josephs car to the hospital. Mittion and Wulfhere were to take his equipment. Once we arrived at the hospital, Mittion informed me that Joseph had died in route. I then, with Elaine contacted Josephs family members (his mother and brother Alan) and informed them of the situation. I gave them my phone number should they need to contact me for any reason. March 1997 -Lord William Goes to Gulf Wars VI carrying South Keep Battle Standard. Members of Count Wulfhere and House Windrider setup a Josef memorial at their War encampment.
A.S. XXXII (MAY 1997-APRIL 1998) 3/98- South Keep sends for the first time a large contingent of troops to Gulf Wars VII. The troops were led by the Seneschal Lord William de Cordoba, Squire to Sayyid Kalim of Tribe Sha! The Warriors included Noel- Ld William's valiant man-at-arms, Tim of South Keep, who also Created two beautiful matching, Scottish Targes as gifts for the Calontiri Royals and fed the entire Encampment with his Culinary skills. Also at the War were Leomainne and Basil Mcskewer of Clan Trahurn, Basils wife Laura, Leonardo de Leon,(who became authorized and took wonderful photos). There was much combat and all the members of the Shire fought in the first field engagement Survived and were victorious.
First Off I'd Like to say Thank you to Hugo, Neal and Tim for being able to come out to the Demo at Belen Jesuit Prep. They fought like beasts and did a fabulous job as usual. I'd also like to thank Coqui Ross for inviting us and his class for the wonderful gift of an maille, squires-style, chain for my-self and since Hugo was deemed the the Winner of the Tourney, one for him as well. Who knows when he gets back to the West a knight will let him wear it! (I believe they (Knights)are standing in line out there), He should be leaving for good this Time....Boo hiss, fighter practice will not be the same! In any event, a fabulous time was had by all, Though we could use
more of our folk to help with "crowd" control. But we are getting better at our
demo format. Hopefully we'll be able to show off our "kinder-gentler" side in
the future. I'd also like to Say that the Shire of Sangre del Sol has invited us to play
at some demos that they are doing this month, The dates are 11th, 18th and 25th. Location
TBA in Broward. Let me know if your interested. More to come on this Website when the
photos go up See ya next Tuesday 12 July Shire Members Defend Northern Region in Panhandle Skirmishes Ld William and Noel go to the Far northern reaches of the Kingdom to Defend Ourselves from an overeager Meridian Army who was aided by their pernicious Atlantian Lackys. With the Aid of Chivalry and prowess, we fought many battles and won decisively. But the it was the weather that truely was the foe. The Heat was so terrible Sir Kaddud was laid low had to taken to a hospital, whereupon he recovered. But when the Sun came down the air cooled a bit and we refreshed ourselves at Earl Bytors miraculous "Beer Tree". And regaled each other with story and song. 8 Aug 98 Summer has been upon us with an oppressive Vengeance Summer has been upon us with an oppressive Vengeance. however that has only slightly dampened out spirits. Fighter practices continue and the Meetings at my house also continue. Starting this August the Shire Meetings will be moving to every other week. Fighter Practices will be moved to Merry Xmas Park inb S. Miami. Consult this calendar for details. (The Postal Mailing list is almost done- A paper newsletter is almost there!). We also send best wishes and congratulations to Lady Elena des Nachts. She has finally Authorized in Sword and Shield, and has gone off to fight in the Pennsic War, bearing the Shire's Battle Flag! We all wish her good luck and good Hunting
Aug 98/ Lady Elena Des Nachts Goes to the Pennsic War- Earldomere The Lady Elena Des Nachts takes the Shire's Banner to the Field and represents us at The Pennsic War. 16 Sept 98 Tornado strikes Fall Coronation Site Those of you who have not already heard, Fall Coronation was a Real Blowout, literally. It has Pretty much been dubbed "Fall Toronation 98".It reminded me eerily of a miniature Hurricane Andrew. This due to one possibly several small cyclones hitting the Campsite early Sunday Evening. As it turned out The Shires of South Keep, Swamp Keep, House Trahern and many other encampments were at/near Ground Zero of a waterspout on the lake that blew its way onto land. That land being our Camp Site. Neal and I (William de Cordoba) watched from our respective tents the incredible wall of wind and water come off the lake and onto land almost directly towards us. It was then that my pavilion was blown apart and I was otherwise preoccupied. There will be many stories to tell and I will post Reliable versions of the event as seen by other eyewitnesses. But for the most part my tent was collapsed by the Wind (While I was in it!), Claude's tent was squashed flat by a HUGE branch that was ripped of a tree. luckily Claude was not there. (Some of us did not know Claude was not there but that is another story....) Neal's English Civil War Tent Stayed up but was narrowly missed by the aforementioned tree. Many of Clan Trahern's tents were wiped out but were restored/rebuilt and camp dinner was made. Our own bard, Phil kept all our spirits up, singing many songs and entertaining us all. I would like to thank ALL of the people from all over the Kingdom, some I knew, most I didn't, who came by on "Disaster Patrol" and helped look for people/tents gear or provided food or other aid. Your help truly shows the good spirits and kind hearts of our Kingdom . VIVAT TRIMARIS!
25 Sept 98 Hurricane Floyd Strikes South Keep and Southern areas all in Shire fare well Greetings All, Due to the proximity of Hurricane Georges, our area has been put on Hurricane Watch. I have gotten word from Miami-Dade County Parks that all facilities will be closed. As Autocrat I am officially Canceling the Summer Harvest Burning Event. However at the meeting last night we decided to, Conditions permitting, reschedule our Event on Halloween Weekend, October 30-Nov 1st (Who knows? After a month of cleanup we will be ready for a party!!!) I want all of you to get your supplies, and whatnot and take care. If I don't speak with you soon I'll be in touch one way or another. Nancy and I will be going to Ft Lauderdale, if its bigger that Category 3 (We are in Mandatory Evac Zone).
A.S. XXXI (MAY 1998-APRIL 1999) 05/06/98 Demo at Cutler Ridge Elementary- Miami The Demo at Cutler Ridge Elementary Was a Great sucess! Participating in our Demo were William Herrera, Hugo Serrano, Tim Levandowski and Milan Novak. Many thanks to Hugo, Tim and Milan for their kind patience and assistance. The Demo was held in two parts: A "Show and tell" phase where various reproduction of Medieval Weapons and Armour were displayed and discussed, And the second part where with began with a procession through the School Grounds to the Cafeteria where a mock Pas de Arms was held. We picked volunteers from the Children to assist us. There were six children chosen to be "Squires" for our 3 "Knights", 2 for the judges, 3 girls to be the Ladies for whom our "Knights" fought, and one girl who was our Banner Bearer (carrying the Shire's banner). The rest of the girls were separated to form the "Ladies Gallery" and the rest of the boys as the rowdy populace! It was great fun. 31 Oct 99 A Southern Harvest Burning and South Keep's 21st Anniversery All Hallows Eve event! We've come of age! Battles Over the South Keep Harvest (Hay Bales) Were fought over Between Sangre
del Sol and South Keep. Sangre had the adavantage of House Windryder as Sir Mittion was
then the Champion of Sangre del Sol. South Keep and its allies fought Bravely but
alas were defeated. Later on in the day Helen and Linda from the English Civil War
Re-enactors performed a Dressage display with their Fine Andalusian Stallions. Merchant
held their wares on Display. As Great Feast and Party were attended and there was much
merriment throughout the evening.
10 Jan 99 Happy Holidays and Joyous Greetings this season! Happy Holidays and Joyous Greetings this season! I will keep this short as there is very little to report. Money has been received from the Kingdom for an event that we did and the Deposit for our Harvest Burning Event has been returned. We are now better off finacially as we head into the new year. There was some miscommunication with Sangre del Sol concerning the Joint Fighter Practice at Greynolds last Sunday but all of us who attended had a great time and fought until we dropped. Feb 1, 99 Shire Militia returns from Scots/Welsh War! We have Just Come back From Scots/Welsh War!. Noel, Ulfkell, Lady Elena, Isabel, Leomainne, and Ld William went to this new site in Paisley which is about 20 Miles Northwest of Deland . There was much fighting as well as Ld William's discovery of the "Closed Helm Yak". The site was very nice and they have lots of room, though it is primitive camping (No Cabins). TMT (Memorial Day weekend) will be held at this site on another part of the 1500acre Boy Scout Reservation. This site is very nice and may replace We-Wa. It is further north by almost 1.5 hours but will probably be well worth it. Feb 8 99 Shire Prepares for War! Gulf Wars Prep, South Keep will most likely be Camping with Sayyid Kalim and Tribe SHA at the end of Queens highway this year. In addition I have promised him that South Keep's militia Will be fighting under his Command. Also the King has asked that All Shires produce at least 50 Combat Arrows as part of the Royal Levy for our Archery Contingent this year. Since we have archers going I do not foresee this to be a problem. I would however like to be able to present His Majesty with an accurate count of the ammunition we are bringing. Let it not be said the South Keep cannot Arm itself! 3/99 Shire Once again Sends Expeditionary Force to Gulf Wars VII. -Meridies Fielding Sseveral Warriors Out Shire members once again Trekked to the Annual War with Ansteorra. Among the Member were Noel of South Keep And Ulfkell (men-at arms to Ld William De Cordoba), Lady Elena des Nachts, Tim and his son Nicholas (Who Once again provided meals for the Group) Also present were Shire Ex-pats Olivia, and Clan Trahern members Mandrake Trahern and his lady the fair Carolina, the redoubtable Leomhianne, and several others. Unfortunately Nature had other plans and the worst rains of recorded Gulf Wars history Deluged the Land and made the War miserable for all. Thus ensued "The Great Escape" and many returned home early.
Aug 13, 1999 Hot Summer Good Fighting! The Summer has been long and hot
as is usual here in Trimaris. So there has not been much going on in the way
of Events. Our joint fighter practices have been a success. We had an excellent turnout at
the the first one at Greynolds park in the last week in June. Their Royal Highnesses
and many of the fighters from Sea March and Sangre Del Sol were in attendance. 9/12, 1999 Hurricane Floyd Comes to South Keep Due To Hurricane Floyd, The Shire Meeting scheduled for this Tuesday has been canceled. I hope everyone has taken proper precautions, and have prepared themselves accordingly. I will Reshedule the Shire meeting when things have settled down
Sept 22, 1999 South Keep Goes to Seamarch's 20th anniversary Pas de Armes The Event at Sea March was Great! If you didn't go
