Waterbearers

Official Shire of South Keep Website.Home Up

BASIC OVERVIEW

Each local group, i.e. Shire or Barony, should have a Water Bearer and if possible a deputy Water Bearer.

All officers must be BLUE card members in good standing.

This officer will require a 1 gal. lawn & garden spray bottle. Clean towels and a small cooler would be a good idea to have on hand also, but is not absolutely necessary. This spray bottle should be supplied by the local group and treated as Shire property.

All Shires/Baronies of the Kingdom of Trimaris will be split into four different regions by the Kingdom Chirurgeon and Kingdom Water Bearer. The purpose of this separation is to better serve the populace while allowing officers as much free time as possible.

Each of the four regions will be supplied with Regional Equipment, such as large drinking coolers, clothes, tables, and other material as it becomes available.

DUTIES

Shire level duties will consist of ensuring sufficient water is on hand at demonstrations, fighter practices (if requested by marshal), and events being hosted by the shire. This means either the officer or their deputy must be on hand to coordinate any volunteers and to coordinate with other officers from their REGION.

Regional duties consist of going to all events within your region to assist the hosting Water Bearer. Since each region will consist of 5 - 7 groups, this should allow an attendance of two Water Bearers at each lyst (including light weapons) while still allowing everyone plenty of free time to enjoy the event. If you cannot attend an event being held in your region, then you should substitute your deputy (if you have one), or at least notify the hosting Water Bearer.

At Kingdom events, the Kingdom Water Bearer will coordinate. All Water Bearer Officers should send notice on whether or not they will attend the upcoming event. Again the more officers in attendance at an event, the more free time for all.

HANDLING VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are the back bone of the Society, thank them even when you have no need for their service so that they will be there when you do need them. AND you will!

HANDLING VOLUNTEERS(cont.)

Only blue card members are allowed upon the lyst field during holds. This includes periods between rounds in a tournament. If a volunteer doesn’t’ have a blue card, then assign them to watering the populace and any fighters who leave the field. Make sure that they roam around the field and switch them off if you have a surplus of volunteers.

Volunteers who have blue card memberships, and other Water Bearer Officers, should be utilized in watering down the combatants between rounds and during general holds.

All volunteers should be instructed to keep an eye on those we are serving. Many a gentle will only signal with a raised glass or a wave of the hand rather than disturb the other gentles watching by calling out.

INFORMATION

Squeeze bottles should be used rather than those that require sucking a straw, tell any gentle that sucks upon your straw, the dangers of passing around the "Gulf Wars Crud" and other fine transmittable diseases.

If a fighter looks pale or bright red and has not apparently been drinking, TELL THE NEAREST MARSHAL. Let them check out the fighter. It is neither our responsibility nor our prerogative to interfere with a fighter or a lyst. Maintain a good rapport with your marshals, let them know who is water bearing and where your station is located.

Ladies make good water bearers, they can play upon a lord’s chivalry, for what lord can rightfully refuse a lady’s plea that he drink from her jug. It especially helps if she also knows his knight!!!

The common drinks used are water and a 50/50 mix of Gatorade and water. Neither of these should be served ICED. They should be placed straight into the jug from the sink and replaced if they get warm.

Cool wet clothes kept in a small cooler of cold water can help bring a overheated person back down again and should be kept handy IF a chirurgeon is on duty for their use.

Lysts, both light and heavy, are our primary responsibility. But we should try to also be there for yeoman and archery competitions. Laureates where competitors and audience will both thirst. Not to forget COURT, I am still surprised at all the gratitude I received the first time I lugged four pitchers of water down from the feast hall to the chapel for court. Any time people gather in the heat, water should at least be available, even if it is serve yourself!!!
